Thinking about moving back to India? Questions worth asking
Moving back to India from the US was an important decision that I took in my career.
I spoke about the decision in a recent post and many engineers from the US, Europe, Singapore reached out about shifting back to India.
We discussed various points around career, finances, lifestyle—there’s so much to weigh, and no easy answer:
✅ What are my primary motivations—career growth, family, quality of life, or impact?
✅ Have I evaluated career opportunities in India in my specific field?
✅ How does my long-term financial planning compare in both geographies?
✅ Have I spoken to friends, mentors, or professionals who have made the move?
✅ Would I be comfortable with the lifestyle trade-offs (infrastructure, bureaucracy, pollution, etc.)?
✅ Can I try working remotely from India for a few months before making the final move?
While I shared my thought process with a few folks, connecting with them made me realize that a lot of people go through an anxious phase thinking about it.
I have put down a framework (Making the move back: My journey from the US back to India) around how I made the exact decision once myself. If you're considering the move, I hope this helps. And of course, happy to connect and chat.
